Recipes, versions and scaling to batch volume
Write a recipe once. The app scales it to the batch volume, the alpha acid of the hops in stock and your brewhouse efficiency.
The brewer writes recipes in the office on the Recipes screen. Only the Beer and the Batch volume are required. Always add how long primary fermentation and maturation take, though, or the recipe cannot be saved.
Creating a recipe
- Click New recipe. You can Start from a template and edit it.
- Fill in the targets: original gravity, final gravity, bitterness and colour.
- Under Procedure, choose the Mash method: Infusion, Single decoction or Double decoction.
- Click Generate steps. The app fills in the mash, including the share of each decoction. Then adjust temperatures and times.
- Enter the Mash ratio. From it, the operator sees on brew day how many litres of mash to pull.
- Under Ingredients, enter what goes into the beer and when. Click Save recipe.
Doses in percent
You enter a dose as a fixed amount (kg, g, l) or as a target:
- % of grist for malt, worked out from the target gravity, the malt analysis and the brewhouse efficiency.
- % of bitterness for hops, worked out from the target bitterness, the lot's alpha acid and the boil time.
The What the recipe gives panel shows grist, gravity, bitterness, colour and energy as you type. It is an estimate, not a measurement. When the grist misses the target gravity, it offers to rescale it.
Scaling to the batch volume
When you create a batch, you enter the Planned volume. Fixed doses are scaled by the ratio of volumes. Percentage doses are recalculated for the batch:
- hops by the alpha acid of the lot in stock,
- malt by the lot analysis and your brewhouse efficiency. Until batches are measured, the Default efficiency from the brewhouse settings applies.
You record a lot's analysis when receiving it, under Lot analysis. When a figure is missing, the app does not invent a dose; it says what is missing. The actual weight from the scale is then recorded, see Brew day step by step.
Recipe versions
You edit a recipe freely. Until a batch is brewed by the latest version, edits go into it.
After that, saving creates a new version. The old one is Locked and stays the production record of its batches. A new batch uses the latest version, and later edits leave it alone.
